Money Advice Direct is offering assistance to Cardiff residents so they do not let the credit crunch make their lives miserable.
Huge consumer debt and rising prices for food, fuel and household bills are already putting pressure on many residents across residents of Cardiff. There are huge extra financial pressures on people at the moment and by encouraging people to plan ahead and be thrifty the helpline hopes to ease some of those pressures. To this end the following is some advice from the regional debt advice team on how to deal with unsecured debts.
- If you live in Cardiff - Don't panic! But don't ignore the problem, it won't go away.
- Consider an IVA to clear personal debts in Cardiff, Glamorgan or Wales. To qualify you must owe at least £17,000 to more than two lenders.
- Please note that for consumers considering a Bankruptcy Order, Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or Protected Trust Deed (PTD); that although the consumer may become debt free at the end of the Bankruptcy, IVA or PTD period, the effect on their credit rating is likely to remain on file for 6 years. In addition the consumers / debtors name, address and birth date will become public knowledge on the governments “Individual Insolvency Register”. The individual insolvency register
- Don't take out more credit or put more on your credit cards - you'll only get yourself in worse trouble. And don't use your credit card to take out cash or pay your mortgage - this will only push you deeper into debt.
- Talk to your creditors and let them know you are having problems. If you only speak then call 0800 074 6918 and one of the team will help you.
- Make sure you keep up your most important regular payments like mortgage/rent, council tax, gas and electricity before tackling your credit card debt. Otherwise you will be in danger of losing your home, having your gas and electricity cut off; or ending up in court and even possibly prison.
- Check your income and investigate whether there's any extra help you are entitled to that you're not getting, such as tax credits.
- Consider a debt management plan to clear personal debts. To qualify you must owe at least £5,000 to more than two lenders.
- Please note that for consumers considering a Debt Management Plan (DMP), although the consumer may become debt free at the end of the DMP period, if a default notice has been issued the effect is likely to remain on the consumer's credit profile for a lengthy time.
- Please note that for consumers considering a Debt Management Plan (DMP), although a debt management plan may be able to negotiate a lower monthly payment, this will usually lead to an increase in the size of the sum to be repaid and that a consumer's credit rating may be impaired.
- Look carefully at your spending and see if there is anything you are able to cut down on, but don't be over- ambitious or you won't stick to it. If you have recently lost your job or are unable to work, check for any payment protection insurance (PPI) you may have taken out and whether you can make a claim.
- Work out exactly how much you have coming in and going out, and how much you can realistically afford each month to pay off your credit card debt.
- Think twice about taking out a loan to pay off all your debts. You may end up paying back a lot more than you borrowed and at very high interest rates; you may not be able to afford the repayments; and the loan may be secured against your home which you could then lose.
- Consider bankruptcy to clear personal debts. To qualify you must owe at least £750.
- Read the small print! A 0% offer on balance transfers may not apply on your new purchases using the card.
