Being in debt with a number of creditors can be a stressful situation. Not only do you have the inconvenience of having to make several payments every month, it can become a balancing act if your payments become unaffordable – trying to pay off the ‘most important’ debts first.
When you’re in debt, it’s important that you pay them all back. Thankfully, there are a number of debt solutions that can make that an easier task such as:-
IVA – An individual Voluntary Arrangement An IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) is typically for people with over £15,000 of debt who do not think they are able to repay the full amount. An IVA is a legally-binding agreement, usually taking place over the course of five years, in which you will agree to make monthly payments based on how much you can afford. Once the terms have finished, your remaining debt will be considered written off. Read more in IVA here. If you do decide on an IVA as a method of dealing with your debts, you complete the IVA application.
Bankruptcy – Bankruptcy is a court order that you can apply for if you're in debt. It may be the best way for you to free yourself from excessive debts that you simply cannot pay by sharing out any assets you have among your creditors. Someone you owe money to could also make you bankrupt, even if you don't apply for it through your own choice. Read more about Bankruptcy
Debt Management Plan (DMP) – Debt Management can seem like an easy way out of temporary financial problems, giving you a lifeline to cover your bills. There’s a down side though that not many consider until they’ve experienced it for themselves such as the procedure not being legally binding. Read more about Debt Management Plans. Please note that for consumers considering a Debt Management Plan (DMP), although the consumer may become debt free at the end of the DMP period, if a default notice has been issued the effect is likely to remain on the consumer's credit profile for a lengthy time.
Please note that for consumers considering a Debt Management Plan (DMP), if interest and charges continue to apply then there will be an increase in the total amount of debt to be repaid and that due to lower monthly payments it is very likely that the debt will have to be repaid over a longer period of time.
Remortgaging - Existing homeowners could potentially save a lot of money if they remortgage now – and they will be even more pleased to hear that interest rates may fall even further in the coming months. it’s important to take into account the costs of remortgaging – the mortgage arrangement fee, for example – as well as the more limited availability of mortgages and the higher loan-to-value ratio required by a lot of lenders.
