There is a lot of misery around with debt and it is a real concern. It is definitely a big a growing problem in Hereford. Hereford is a city, civil parish and county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles east of the border with Wales. Debt enquiries in Hereford have increased by more than a third, and the debt advice team at Money Advice Direct has warned that it is a growing problem, with some people more than £50,000 in debt with credit cards, loans and store cards.

Money Advice Direct has seen a 35 per cent increase in the number of people seeking debt advice since last year in Hereford and estimate the average debt of people seeking advice is £15,000. In the last 12 months the debt advice team have dealt with £6.4 million of debt.

Rise in Pensioners in debt in Hereford

The advice team at Money Advice Direct has also noticed the increase in the number of Hereford pensioners seeking dent advice. A quarter of the 300 pensioners who contact the debt helpline every month are seeking advice on finances or benefits.

Pensioners are on a relatively fixed income and their pensions are not going up in line with earnings. So they might keep the same out-goings but their income cannot sustain it. The advice team is concerned that the numbers of pensioners getting into debt is going to increase.

Unable to meet credit card payments

Money Advice Direct has also noticed an increase in the number of people unable to meet their credit cards repayments due to recent interest rate hikes. There has been an increase in people being more than one month behind with their credit card repayments. The interest rates going up is going to have a big affect and we are going to see more bankruptcy case.

Money Advice Direct gives the following advice for people in debt living in Hereford:

• Make a list of your debts, the money you owe and to whom.
• Work out your budget by listing all the expenses and income in your household.
• Sort out your priority debts.
• Sort out your non-priority debts.
• Consider an IVA if your debts are over £15,000 to at least 3 creditors.
