There had been a 30 percent rise in the number of people in Peterborough contacting Money Advice Direct because they were in arrears with their mortgage or their secured loan. It is thought that the figures could keep rising as job losses and the recession continue to take their toll and wreak havoc in households all across the UK.
In the past, if a person with a personal loan or other form of credit agreement fell into arrears with their monthly repayments, their bank of building society who provided the loan in the first place would probably offer them very little help and sympathy with their problem, choosing instead to demand that the customer got their repayments back up to date, threatening them with legal action and County Court Judgements (CCJ’s), or worse, if they failed to get their loan account back on track.
According to Money Advice Direct however, banks and building societies are now more likely to help borrowers who may be struggling with keeping their personal loan repayments up to date. This is due to an increasing number of borrowers opting to take out an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) to cover their personal loans and other debts, leading to lenders not getting the full amount of what they are owed by customers and therefore have been forced to adopt a more sympathetic approach towards borrowers in arrears, becoming more amenable in talking to borrowers with regard to rescheduling their loans, or reducing the repayments for a period, to help them to get back on track.
Lenders are starting to realise that it is better to work with their customers and managing to get some amount of money in, rather than allowing them to take out an IVA, where the lender could end up losing out altogether.
Through their specialist training, Money Advice Direct can deliver their expertise on the IVA procedure to help those struggling with serious debts over £17,000. To apply for an IVA please click HERE
IVA case study from a recent client from Peterborough
Mrs Merkin (37) from Bretton, Peterborough was in debt to the tune of £35,000.
She looked at all the possible debt solutions, such as Bankruptcy, and decided on an IVA. The IVA solution offered her a debt reduction of 60%, cutting the bill to £10,500 and reducing her monthly payments from £1,000 to £175 over five years. The IVA took about a month to negotiate and set up.
