Sunderland is a city in Tyne and Wear, England. It was formerly a county borough but now forms part of the City of Sunderland. Sunderland situated at the mouth of the River Wear. New figures released by Money Advice Direct show that over 2000 Sunderland residents’ per month receive advice for failing to pay their personal debts. This compares to just 650 per month compared to last year. Low income, over-commitment, illness or disability and job losses were cited as the most common reasons for seeking advice.

The number of people in Sunderland seeking debt advice for credit card and unsecured loan arrears has almost doubled. The national debt advice team covering Tyne and Wear believe the rise is partly because residents are 'burying their heads in the sand' when faced with crippling debt. Many also wrongly choose to tackle the wrong creditors first. A lot of people have over-committed themselves. They have problems with mortgage arrears but are repaying credit cards rather than giving priority to the mortgage.
