Debt problems in York are rising and Money Advice Direct forecast that York and many other parts of North Yorkshire could be most affected by the credit crunch. York is a walled city, sited at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city is noted for its rich heritage and it has played an important role throughout much of its almost 2,000 year existence.
People who wanted debt help in York tend to be poorer than the rest of the population, with an average net monthly household income of £1,000 - less
than two-thirds the national average.
According to the debt advice team covering York the average resident of York who came to the debt help organisation for advice owed £18,600, 60% more than the average debt accumulated by residents of York five years ago.
Nearly half of homeowners in York who contacted Money Advice Direct for debt advice were behind on their credit card debts or unsecured loan repayments, many homeowners were also in negative equity, while a 25% of people in York were in debt with their council tax. The debt advice team also found that one in 10 people living in York who contacted the service had at least 10 different debts, owing money through credit cards, loans, overdrafts and hire purchase agreements, but 58 per cent of these had no available income to pay back what they owed.
IVA advice is now the main debt solution being offered for personal debts over £15,000, accounting for one in three of all enquiries received. An Individual Voluntary Agreement is a legal and formal agreement between you and your creditors. They are suitable for people, with unsecured debts of over £15,000, owed to at least 3 creditors, who can no longer afford to make their full monthly repayments to creditors, but who can afford to make a reasonable offer.
An IVA proposal shows how you are going to repay your creditors, usually over a period of five years. It will be prepared and drawn up by an Insolvency Practitioner. To work out whether you qualify for an IVA you will be asked a number of questions about your current financial position. This will enable our advisors to calculate how much you can realistically afford to pay your creditors each month. Also we will ask you about any other assets you may have, as these may need to be included in the IVA. If you can demonstrate that, over the five-year term of the arrangement, you could pay back a reasonable amount of your total debt, an IVA could be a suitable option for you.
Unlike bankruptcy, details of an IVA are not openly published in the local press. It is a confidential arrangement between you and your creditors. Employers and landlords are not informed. Read more about IVAs here.
