The banks often send an automated letter in response. The banks will state that charges were not unlawful. The consumer must understand that charges must be in proportion to the time and cost of imposing them. The banks do not need to charge £50 for going £1 over an agreed overdraft limit. The bank is making enough money from normal / agreed banking charges without the need to make stealth fines.

Banks often forget that the public are loyal to their banks. Unfair bank charges will only upset the customer and force them to change their custom to another bank with better bank account rules.

The banks will often write back saying the charges are normal service fees. This is wrong.

People sometimes forget that banks are profit making businesses. They need to make charges to show outstanding profits to their shareholders. If the banks are making unfair bank charges this will upset shares prices and fuel an uprising against clearing banks.
