It is estimated that UK overcharging by banks and building societies makes £1.7bn a year from levying charges of up to £39 for unauthorised overdrafts and bounced cheques.
The cost to a bank of a bounced cheque is around £2.50 and the test case now being brought in the High Court by the Office of Fair Trading will establish whether the banks can add a penalty element to their charges, over and above the actual administrative cost.
Most UK high street leading banks have been inundated with claims of bank overcharging and have had to open specialist departments to deal with the problem.
The most common complaint is for fees charged for unauthorised overdrafts. The specialist bank overcharging departments have cost the banks millions of pounds as they have been forced to employ additional customer care staff.
Many UK high street clearing banks use dubious methods to avoid refunding unreasonable bank charges to its customers.
It is estimated that UK banks are overcharging customers millions of pounds a year. Some banks are aware of bank overcharging claims from the public yet tell staff to reject overcharging complaints, even if they are legitimate.
